NOTE about tiles:  there a 144 sq inches in a sq foot

IF each tile is square and is 6 inches long then there are 36 sq inches per tile.  144" divided be 36" = 4

The kitchen is 15 feet wide (.75 x 20)
The doorway is 1.5 feet wide (10% of the shorter side)
The total area of the kitchen is 20ft x 15ft or 300 square feet.  The counters should be no more than 15 square feet. (1/20 x 300)
The counters are 7.5 ft. long. (15 / 2)

You’ll need 285 sq ft of tile.  (300-15)  Each square foot requires 4 tiles (because they are only 6”), so you’ll need 285 x 4 tiles = 1140 tiles to cover the floor.

heuristic: a structure for the problem solving process
Five steps of the heuristic approach
1. Define the problem
2. Generate solutions
3. Define course of action
4. Implement solution

5. Evaluate solution
